The mucus barrier is a protective gel that lines all mucosal surfaces, including the vaginal tract, eyes, mouth, lungs, and gut, where it serves many essential functions to preserve health:
When this barrier fails — through aging, infection, inflammation, or medical interventions — tissues become vulnerable, fueling chronic conditions and discomfort.
Our platform launches in women’s health—where unmet need is greatest and the scientific rationale for barrier-based intervention is strongest. Historically underfunded and underserved, intimate and mucosal health is now poised for major scientific and commercial breakthroughs.

Tulip Biosciences re-engineers nature’s protective mucus coating into safe, stable materials that support vulnerable tissues.
Natural mucus is built from mucins, large proteins covered in complex sugar chains that block harmful microbes, hold moisture, and keep delicate surfaces comfortable. We’ve identified the key “active ingredients” of mucins and rebuilt them as synthetic mucin-mimetic glycopolymers — long, flexible molecules that can stick to and protect mucosal tissue, balance pH, and support a healthy microbiome.
These engineered materials let us restore the body’s first line of defense in places where it breaks down, from the vagina to the eyes, gut, and beyond, creating a new class of antibiotic-sparing, barrier-restoring therapies.
Standard products (including many personal lubricants and BV treatments) are built from simple thickeners and excipients. They often have unphysiological pH or osmolarity, can irritate tissue, disrupt the microbiome, or rely on repeated antibiotic use to manage symptoms. These products provide temporary moisture but do not restore the underlying barrier.
Tulip’s mucin-mimetic polymers are fundamentally different. They are engineered to replicate the functional motifs of natural mucus—its glycan chemistry, selective microbial interactions, mucoadhesion, hydration, and protective rheology. Instead of masking symptoms, they rebuild the barrier itself, creating a more stable, microbiome-supportive environment and reducing reliance on antibiotics. This barrier-first mechanism is what allows the platform to extend across multiple mucosal tissues, from the vagina to the eyes, mouth, and gut.
Women’s health has the clearest unmet need and the strongest biological signal for barrier repair. Vaginal barrier failure drives recurrent infections, discomfort, and overuse of antibiotics, yet the category has seen little true innovation for decades. By starting here, we can deliver meaningful impact quickly—improving comfort, reducing recurrence, and supporting microbiome stability for tens of millions of women.
All mucosal surfaces rely on a shared barrier architecture—hydration, selective filtering, microbial regulation, and epithelial protection. When this architecture breaks down, tissues become vulnerable across multiple organ systems.
Our mucin-mimetic polymers replicate these core barrier functions, enabling applications well beyond the vaginal tract. The same materials can be tuned for ocular dryness, oral dryness/Sjögren’s, gut barrier dysfunction, respiratory inflammation, skin barrier repair, and advanced wound care, where moisture balance, microbial control, and epithelial protection are essential for healing. This cross-tissue versatility is what makes Tulip a true mucosal-health platform rather than a single-product company.
